Men - Is Your Snoring Keeping
Her Up At Night?

People joke about men and loud snoring but it’s no laughing matter. It can be a symptom of sleep apnea, a condition where you stop breathing for seconds at a time and deprive your brain of oxygen.

Not all snoring is sleep apnea related but it’s worth checking out because if you do have sleep apnea, you could have a stroke, which is definitely nothing to laugh about.

It’s also not funny when your mate can’t get enough sleep because you are keeping her awake. Or maybe she sleeps in a separate room just to get some peace and quiet at night. My first husband made such a racket that even when I moved to the guest bedroom upstairs, I could still hear him rattling the whole house.

Do yourself and your partner a favor and fix this problem. You may get a better night’s sleep if you figure out what’s causing it, and wouldn’t it be nice not to disturb the one you love every night?

Snoring can be caused by different things so you’d have to find out what your specific problem is. There are various treatment options including some you can do yourself.

  • A CPAP mask
  • CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure. This is a mask you wear at night that forces air into your throat to keep the airway open.

  • Lose weight
  • The heavier you are, the more fatty tissue there is in your airway that might be blocking airflow. Losing weight might reduce that tissue.

  • An oral appliance
  • You could wear a device in your mouth that keeps the airway open while you sleep.

  • Sleep on your side
  • Sometimes just avoiding sleeping on your back takes care of it. A common bit of advice to deal with this is to sew a tennis ball into the back of a T-shirt so that when you try to roll on your back at night, the discomfort of the ball would make you sleep only on your side.

  • Don’t drink before going to bed
  • Alcohol is a muscle relaxant and may relax the muscles in your throat so you could try abstaining and see if it makes a difference.

  • Surgery
  • Probably the most extreme treatment but if all else fails…

If you can’t eliminate or reduce the issue on your own, you may need to pay a visit to your doctor and/or a sleep disorder center.

Here are a few products that may help you (and your partner) find some relief:

If your partner is disturbed by your snoring, take some action to solve the problem. It may not be a big problem for you; after all, you can’t hear yourself when you’re asleep. But she can. And she deserves a quiet bedroom and a good night’s sleep.
