I had a bipolar boyfriend

I wholeheartedly agree with the above. You can not rescue, save, probably even help in the least bit, a person who suffers from bipolar disorder.
My boyfriend was awesome in the beginning, but soon started being extremely unreliable, not even bothering to cancel plans HE made an hour ago, he just would become unavailable, spending money like a drunken sailor, self medicating with tons of booze on the weekends, obsessing about other women, and all the while saying he didn't want to lose me.
It's the illness, but it's hard not to resent getting nothing but heartache and frustration. It is a drain on your mind and soul, and you will end up having mental problems yourself if you don't get out.
I also agree with looking at why you are attracted to this situation...rescue fantasies, low self esteem, unfinished business, or all of the above.
Good luck either way....
